The Frankfurt Fellowship Programme

From now until 30 April 2012, publishers, editors, rights professionals and literary agents from all over the world can apply to participate in the 2012 Frankfurt Fellowship Programme.

The Frankfurt Fellowship was launched to mark the 50th anniversary of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1998 and to support up-and-coming international publishing professionals. Over the last 13 years, it has created a close network within the international publishing industry. More than 220 participants from 44 countries have taken part in the programme to date.

Application requirements:


  • Several years of experience in publishing
  • Good command of English
  • Basic knowledge of German (recommended)

Your application should include:

  • Completed application form
  • Recommendation from a manager at your current publishing company
  • Three recommendation letters from international business partners

Your application and recommendation letters must be completed in English. Both should be submitted via e-mail and post.

The submission deadline is 30 April 2012.

German-French programme for young booksellers and publishing professionals

The German-French exchange programme for young booksellers and publishing professionals offers top industry professionals the opportunity to participate in a three-month exchange programme in the respective partner country from April to June.

We’re already looking for German publishers, bookstores and literary agencies that are interested in either taking on an intern from France or offering one of their own up-and-coming employees a three-month internship in France in 2013.

During their work residency, participants will receive a monthly stipend of 880 euros from the Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO).

The German-French programme for young booksellers and publishing professionals is organised by the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the Bureau International de l’Édition Française (BIEF) and the Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO).

Application requirements:


  • Age limit: No older than 30 at the start of the programme
  • Completion of vocational training or university degree
  • Proof of basic professional experience in publishing, at a literary agency and/or bookstore that is relevant to a work residency in France
  • Good command of French
  • Availability for the entire duration of the programme (beginning of March to end of June)

Your application should include:

  • LCV
  • Application cover letter
  • Credentials (Diploma, training and/or studies, professional experience)
  • Information about work stays in France are also welcome (e.g. publisher names or profiles)

German-French programme for young translators

The Georges Arthur Goldschmidt Programme is aimed at young literary translators from Switzerland, France and Germany. Each year, it enables five German-speaking and five French-speaking young translators to meet with German and French publishers from both countries and to work on translation projects under the guidance of experienced translators.

This scholarship programme is organised by the Frankfurt Book Fair, along with the Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO), the Bureau International de l’Édition Française (BIEF) and the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia.

Participants receive a monthly stipend of 900 euros from the FGYO. Some costs will be covered for travel to various programme locations. Any additional costs must be borne by the participants themselves.

Application requirements:


  • Age limit: No older than 30 (or 35 in rare exceptions)
  • University degree (e.g. literary translation studies at the University of Düsseldorf, etc.) and/or a published literary translation
  • Availability for the entire duration of the programme (January to March)
  • Residence in France, Germany or Switzerland

Your application should include:

  • CV
  • Application cover letter
  • If available:
    Excerpt from a published literary text translated from French, along with the corresponding source text.


Please note that we unfortunately cannot consider translations from any language other than French.

We also ask that you submit a translation project, i.e. a French-language title on which the candidate wishes to work during the workshop. The translation project should be submitted in the form of an approx. one-page presentation of the selected text, along with a short sample translation with the corresponding source text (maximum 5 pages).

The objective of the Goldschmidt Programme is to support literary exchange between the German-speaking and French-speaking worlds. With that said, the following criteria should be kept in mind when selecting a project:

  • Translation rights are still be available in Germany
  • The selected author does not already have a steady German translator
  • The title was published by a professional French-language publishing house

January to March


  • Introductory seminars in Paris and Berlin
  • Visits to French and German publishers
  • Translation workshops at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (LCB) and the Collège International des Traducteurs Littéraires (CITL)
  • Reading and evaluation in Arles
